Whitecaps and Undertows

Summer days in Grand Beach were not always idyllic picture postcard perfect with balmy temperatures and mild breezes. The one or two days that typically followed a cold front and a series of strong summer thunderstorms were always cool and very windy, often too brisk for normal beach activities. They held, nonetheless, enormous fascination for those of us who were strong swimmers.

When we awoke to the sound of rustling leaves, as the wind tore at the branches of the mighty oaks, the distant thunder of waves crashing on the shore of the lake beckoned in a different way. We knew almost instinctively that a violent tide was stirring the lake’s waters to a muddy brown near the shore-that further out the whitecaps curled and blew in the wind, where the colors of the sky were reflected and diffused into a thousand hues of blue and aqua splattered across that foamy panorama.
